Membership of the NFB brings with it a direct route to the ear of Government.

The NFB Policy team is embedded in the workings of Government, with daily liaison with Civil Servants from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (responsible for Construction), the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government and Her Majesty’s Treasury. In addition, the team have working relationships with officials from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (responsible for the clean air strategy) and the Department for Education (responsible for Industry Training Boards, Apprenticeships and Skills).

We organise high-level member meetings and roundtables with officials and Parliamentarians, and this month (August), NFB members of the Major Contractors Group are due to meeting with Industry Training Board officials from the Department for Education, to talk about the NFB’s reform agenda of the CITB.

In addition, the NFB has a good working relationship with a number of Ministers, including the Construction Minister Nadhim Zahawi, who spoke at the Large Contractors Forum in April 2020. You can watch the interview, and members put their questions to the Minister in the webinar library. Select NFB members have been exclusively taking part in fortnightly calls with Minister Zawahi and other industry representatives, as part of the Government’s response to COVID-19. This has given members the opportunity to directly pose questions to the Minister.

When members raise issues with the NFB Policy Team, we can get them in front of Government officials the next day, recent examples include issues in the surety market, the impact of COVID-19 on financial reporting, issues with utilities providers, concerns regarding BREXIT, CITB, apprentices, planning reform and other specific issues.

We engage with Parliamentarians and All-Party Parliamentary Groups and submit members as speakers and representatives to present on behalf of the NFB.

The NFB is also one of the permanent representative organisations on the Construction Leadership Council’s Taskforce, an Industry-Government body with a secretariat provided by the Government. The Taskforce is highly active and at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, met daily with Government to feedback industry concerns. The CLC, and the NFB as a constituent member, wrote the Industry Recovery Plan known as the Roadmap to Recovery.
