- Construction sector and economy need home improvement VAT cut now more than ever says NFB
Figures released today from the Office of National Statistics estimate that construction output fell by 0.5 per cent in the last quarter of 2011 compared to Q3, driven by volume reductions in five out of the nine sectors. Construction output for 2011 as a whole was 2.8 per cent higher than 2010, in part because of the increases in infrastructure. New public housing also increased, 2011 being its highest level since 1980 (www.statistics.gov.uk).

The Index for Construction in Wales for the four quarters to 2011 quarter 3 rose by 7.3 per cent compared with the previous four quarters. The UK index rose by 5.5 per cent over the same period.
Construction output for 2011 quarter 3 rose by 1.6 per cent compared with the previous quarter. The UK index rose by 0.3 per cent over the same period.

The government has set out its plan for growth and has given its backing to the construction industry to lead Britain out of recession. It is also keen to trumpet its support for SMEs by guaranteeing up to £20 billion of bank loans to small businesses over the next two years. The National Federation of Builders (NFB) is pointing out that for this to work banks must be encouraged to back the industry as well.
